Derek Springham: Original Paintings

Paintings of Wales by Derek Springham

Cottages, Abereiddy, Pembrokeshire. Watercolour and pen.

I am very fond of the Welsh countryside and used to do hill-walking and climbing there many years ago. Sadly I have done very few paintings there.

I did some sketches of these cottages on holiday in Pembrokeshire with my mother. This was the last holiday she took as her health deteriorated soon after. I later did the painting and she asked for it for her birthday.

I did a similar one and exhibited it in Woodbridge, Suffolk. I had a delightful phone conversation with the lady who bought it. She had been to Pembrokeshire on holiday for many years, and said that the painting captured the atmosphere of Pembrokeshire as she knew it.

After I painted this I looked up a book by John Blockley to remind myself how he would handle scenes like this. To my surprise, I found that he had drawn the same group of cottages from the other direction.
