Artist Statement

Originally from Northampton I now live in Upminster and studied art and design as a mature student at Havering College of Further & Higher Education. I subsequently gained my BA (Hons) and MA at the University of East London’s Docklands campus.

My paintings, mostly on canvas in oils or acrylics, and sometimes in water-based printing inks, are either figurative or else abstracted compositions depicting my own interpretation, or impression, of reality. My earlier compositions are of the female nude, effectively a celebration of the female form which I have attempted to render in compositionally interesting ways. My later paintings are abstractions based on things seen around me, often architectural in nature reflecting my city environment - colourful, personal impressions based on actual urban scenery or else imagined urban landscapes. I am interested in the lumps and bumps which go to make up the city, in the interesting, sometimes quirky, architectural shapes of some new buildings as well as the sense of dereliction of others, and like to use bold, sometimes surrealistic, colours in an attempt to reach beyond the drab reality of the buildings which inhabit much of London.

Exhibitions

I have exhibited in a number of group exhibitions in and around London including  The Brick Lane Gallery, Guildhall Gallery, Coningsby Gallery, Morley Gallery, R K Burt Gallery, The Gallery in Mayfair, The Gallery in Cork Street, The Cotton Centre, University of East London, Parfitt Gallery Croydon, Citizens Gallery Woolwich, Start Woolwich Centre, The Millers House Bromley-by-Bow, Fairkytes Art Centre Hornchurch, Wanstead House Hall and at the Deptford X Festival. I have also had solo exhibitions at the Visual Arts Centre Romford, The Becket Gallery Brentwood and the Queens Theatre Hornchurch.
